Many alcoholics and addicts worry about how their life will change when they enter a recovery program. Even if they know it will greatly improve their life, they think about all the big changes and decide that it’s easier to just leave things the way they are, which is to say, miserable. Some worry they’ll never be able to have fun again without drugs and alcohol. Even those of us who entered an addiction recovery program convinced it would mean the end of “fun” as we knew it, we quickly realized that we were hardly having fun before entering a rehabilitation program.
A rehabilitation program allows you to live again
While rehab requires a lot of self-reflection and emotional strain, it is truly the door to a life beyond our wildest dreams. I was completely unable to stop drinking and using before my addiction recovery program. I had tried everything in the world to control my drinking, all to no avail. Thinking about it now, I realize I wasn’t having any fun at all. I was hiding in my apartment every day, leaving only to go to the liquor store. Once I made my decision to get healthy and attend a rehabilitation program my life started feeling real again.
Life after an addiction recovery program
What started for me as just a way to stop drinking has now turned into a life full of limitless potential and exciting action. Nowadays, I can set my mind to almost anything and actually do it. When I feel like traveling or doing something new and challenging, I no longer have to worry about having enough booze or drugs to get me through the day. I have problems and issues that arise in my life the same as anyone else, but I don’t drink or use drugs in order to cope with them.
I owe this new life all to a rehabilitation program. And to think, I was worried about whether I could live a happy life without drugs and alcohol!
