Crisis Intervention

Crisis intervention is a term used to refer to the aid extended to somebody undergoing emotional, mental, physical or behavioral problems. For those in various rehabilitation centers, this term refers to the kind of help extended to those who are going through crisis such as those who have drug addiction and alcoholism problems and whose situations may be life threatening. Crisis is not limited to mean drug alcohol addiction. This could be any event or circumstance such as natural disasters such as earthquake and tornado, sexual assault, or criminal victimization; medical illness; mental disease; thoughts of suicide; and problems in relationships like divorce or the sudden death of a loved one, whether she/he is a family or close friend.

Health professional like counselors strongly suggest crisis intervention for many and varied reasons. For one thing, crisis intervention reduces the intensity of emotional, physical, and behavioral reactions to crisis. This also helps individuals in crisis to stay functional amid crisis. But perhaps the most important function of crisis intervention is to help suffering individuals cope up with the crisis and recover from the situation or event.

Professionals that provide intervention says crisis intervention vary in length. Some crisis intervention may range from one session to several weeks. This may also occur in different settings such as treatment centers, crisis centers, drug addiction counseling centers, mental health clinics, schools, offices, and some social service agencies.
